Candidate Tom Steyer
Tom Steyer (69) entered the Democratic presidential race on July 9, 2019 reversing an earlier decision to not run and stay focused on impeaching President Trump. Steyer is a hedge fund manager, philanthropist, environmentalist, liberal activist and fundraiser. Steyer founded Farallon Capital, a hedge fund firm headquartered in San Francisco, California. He made his fortune running Farallon, which was managing $20 billion by the time he left the company. In 2010, Steyer and his wife signed The Giving Pledge to donate half of their fortune to charity during their lifetime. In October 2012, Steyer stepped down from his position at Farallon in order to focus on advocating for alternative energy and politics. He launched NextGen America, a nonprofit organization that supports progressive positions on climate change, immigration, health care, and education. Steyer is a progressive outsider with a business record, backs term limits in Congress, decriminalizing illegal border crossings and expanding the Supreme Court. He says his top priorities are breaking the influence of corporations and addressing climate change.
