Candidate Mike Bloomberg

On Sunday, Nov. 24, Michael Bloomberg (77) entered the Democratic race for the
presidential nomination. Bloomberg, a billionaire and one of the world’s richest men,
was the former Republican mayor of New York City. Bloomberg grew up in Medford,
Massachusetts and attended Johns Hopkins University and Harvard Business School. He
is the co-founder, CEO, and owner of Bloomberg L.P., a global financial service, software
and mass media company. Bloomberg was mayor of New York City for three consecutive
terms, beginning his first in 2001, which may bring him some trouble building a multi-
racial coalition given his record on race relations in New York. Bloomberg apologized
recently for his support of New York police’s “stop-and-frisk" policy. He is late in joining
the race and plans to bypass the first four states on the primary calendar. A Bloomberg
campaign is likely to prioritize gun safety, climate threats, creating good-paying jobs,
and providing quality health care for every American.“[T]he issues I am most passionate
about focus on righting wrongs that have fallen heaviest on the most vulnerable
communities. I know government can improve people’s lives – because when I ran New
York City, that’s exactly what we did.”
