Candidate Elizabeth Warren
On February 9, 2019, Senator Elizabeth Warren (69), announced her candidacy for the 2020 United States presidential election. Warren is a graduate of the University of Houston and Rutgers Law School. In 2012 she became the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts. She is considered a popular progressive and has been highly critical of President Trump. She has served on several committees such as Armed Services, Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, and health, Education and Labor. In 2017, she was asked to stop reading a letter from Coretta Scott King during a Senate debate when Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said, “She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.” This last part has became a slogan for Warren and other women. Her run for the presidency will focus on student loan debt, the power of the banking industry, and working-class people. Warren is also a wife, mother, and grandmother.
