We are absolutely grief-stricken and angry that another Black man was shot by a police officer. And this time it was Jacob Blake, a member of our Evanston family, who was brutally shot in Kenosha in front of his three young children on Sunday.

Our thoughts are with Jacob and his family. Our thoughts are also with the families of the two people murdered last night in Kenosha, during protests.

We feel it in our bones, every single time: None of us are free until all of us are free. We must urgently act to fight for Black lives. In fact, this must be the center of every choice we make – when we vote, when we demand policy changes, and when we speak up in as many ways as possible to say “Black Lives Matter.”

It is not enough to put a sign in our yards.

We ALL need to say more, to do more.
There is a GoFundMe set up for Jacob Blake and his family. https://www.gofundme.com/f/justiceforjacobblake

We also recommend following the Facebook group Evanston Fight for Black Lives to learn more about ways to come together as a community over the next few days, and ways to support Jacob and his family.

We also invite you to learn more about ongoing local conversations about police reform and accountability, and ways to call for community investment and alternatives to policing. We recommend following the The Citizens’ Network of Protection – Evanston, IL for the latest on these critical issues happening in our own city.

The Democratic Party of Evanston is deeply committed to anti-racism and progressive change, and we join the outcry of grief and the call for urgent action.

In solidarity,

Evanston Dems
